How to Update Your Home Without Taking on a Major Remodel

A home remodel doesn’t always have to be a major construction project. There are several key areas that many homeowners can look at to see the home as being dated, inconvenient, or otherwise being a poor fit.

It is possible to make a difference without causing a major disruption in the household: refresh cabinets, improve lighting, update flooring and bathroom finishes, and so on. The trick is to see which changes will make the most difference.

Cabinet Refacing Instead of Replacing Them

Kitchen cabinets are a prime place to look for updating, as they can be a room’s focal point. If the cabinets are still in good shape and the current arrangement is functional, you may not have to replace them at all.

Cabinet refacing can freshen up the exterior and interior doors, drawer fronts, and cabinet surfaces while keeping most of the original cabinetry intact. If the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and the layout now works, then replacing the cabinets may not be necessary. Usually the refacing is done on visible areas including doors, cabinet drawer fronts, and exterior surfaces, leaving the cabinet structure intact.

Update Walls, Backsplashes, and Finishes

You can transform a room without making any structural changes with a new wall color. Neutral colors can help to create a more streamlined look, while adding just the right amount of color to a room can make it feel more inviting.

Another way is to renovate backsplashes in kitchens or bathrooms. Changing the aged backsplash can be a great visual improvement and will enable homeowners to retain other useful elements.

Improve Lighting for Function and Atmosphere

When planning interior home renovation, it can be easy to ignore the lighting elements. Making improvements to fixtures, adding under-cabinet lighting, or enhancing task lighting can help make daily living simpler.

Use a variety of lights, rather than a single, powerful one. Ambient, task, and accent lighting can be combined to make rooms more versatile and highlight their features or architectural details.

Consider Flooring and Smaller Surface Updates

Floors can be an effective way to make the room look dated if they are worn. If the flooring is just in one use location and still in good shape, you might be able to see a big difference in the rest of the house without converting it into a building site.

Other minor changes may involve replacing worn countertops, upgrading bathroom vanities, replacing old mirrors with new ones, or replacing old faucets with new ones.

Improve Storage Without Changing the Layout

If you have a limited space, even the pretty rooms can make your home sub-optimal. Don’t just jump into a complete layout change;first explore what can be done with the current storage.

Organizing cabinet pull-outs, drawer inserts, storage shelves, hooks, and built-in storage can help minimize clutter. This is particularly beneficial in kitchens, bathrooms, entryways, and many other spaces where minor organizational enhancements can have a significant day-to-day impact.
